Frequently Asked Questions

What does Currently Not Collectible actually mean?
When the IRS places your account in CNC status, they formally acknowledge that collecting your tax debt would cause financial hardship. All active collection efforts (including phone calls, letters, levies, and garnishments) are halted. The debt still exists but the IRS steps back.
How much do I have to pay each month in CNC status?
Nothing. That's the key benefit. If the IRS agrees there is no reasonable collection potential, you are not required to make any payments. However, the IRS will continue to apply any future tax refunds to your balance.
Is CNC status permanent?
CNC is considered temporary, though it can last years. The IRS reviews CNC accounts periodically. If your circumstances remain the same, you can stay in CNC until the 10-year collection statute expires and the debt is legally wiped away.
Can the IRS still take my tax refund while I'm in CNC status?
Yes. Even though active collection stops, the IRS will still offset any federal tax refunds against your balance. We advise CNC clients to adjust withholding to minimize refunds. It's better to keep more in each paycheck.
